Drinking Liberally
Superbowl – Football edition – come hang out at the Shanty and watch the New Orleans Saints take on the Indianapolis Colts. DL starts at 6pm – the pregame coverage started Tuesday. Disclosure: I’m a Saints fan – Who Dat Nation! Take that, NFL!
Discuss whether the government should take a role in professional sports, how the Supreme Court could rule on the current NFL case or just root on your favorite quarterback.

Drinking Liberally
This Sunday we’ll have out of town guests again.
Erin Cheuvront and Peter Aiello are cofounders of Election Strategies, a democratic political consulting firm. They have worked on campaigns from both the left and right coasts, gaining experience and professional training in fundraising and polling. Both consultants have Masters Degrees in Political Science/Professional Politics from Suffolk University in Boston. They have been trained and mentored by David Palelogos, a leading political survey expert in the northeast and the only pollster to correctly call the New Hampshire Presidential Primary in 2008. They honed their fundraising skills under the guidance of Vann Snyder, who has been the fundraising director for many prominent campaigns, including Michael Dukakis for President and the current Massachusetts Special Election for Martha Coakley for Senate.
Come hear what they have to say about how fundraising and polling will help the Arizona Democrats win in 2010 and how it will turn the state blue in 2012!
Forward this email to your friends and family who you think might want to participate in Drinking Liberally.
DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! Know your limits and make liberal use of designated drivers. We want to see you back again next week!
Don’t forget the less fortunate. Bring your pocket change to be donated to the Tucson Food Bank

Reading Liberally
Place yet to be determined, but we will be meeting on Monday January 11 at 7:30pm.
Questions for Dave Zirin’s book on “Welcome to the Terrordome”
1. Should politics play a role in the Olympics? (1980 USA Boycott
of Moscow Olympics, Russia boycott of 1984 LA Olympics and
apartheid boycott of South Africa)
2. Was John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s fist pump for Black Power in
the 1968 Olympics appropriate? (Raised hands for black power when
received their gold medals)
3. Does the dress code for NBA players on the bench represent racism?
(Must have sportcoat and nice pants if not playing)
4. Is Barry Bonds singled out for steroid use because he’s black?
5. Should there be an age limitation to enter the NBA? (19 and 1 year
out of high school for American players)
6. Should sports stadiums be publicly funded or privately funded?
7. Do you agree with Zirin when he says that pro athletes are pawns of the white owners and that sports were used to distract from Bush’s Iraq War? (Pat Tillman)
8. Are the owners to blame for the steroid use in baseball? (More steroids = more home runs = more fans)
9. Was Muhammed Ali right to refuse to go into the Army and lose his boxing championship?
10. Why aren’t there more minority owners in professional sports?
11. Should professional athletes be role models for youngsters? (Tiger Woods)

Drinking Liberally
Sunday 6:00pm @ The Shanty
Special guest this week will be Mark Stegeman from the TUSD School Board. Mark is always an entertaining and thought provoking speaker. With the state of Arizona education as of late, I am sure we will all have something to add to this discussion.
